Tragedy

An accident waiting to happen… TAM flight crashes in Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo on July 17. In classic Brazilian fashion, nothing has really been done since the air-crisis began, in September of last year. See my previous post. And now 199 people are dead. They were alive in September. They had their lives ahead of them. They certainly didn’t expect the government to kill them.

Can someone please tell me how to stop biting my nails? I’ve tried everything: pepper, wasabi, cayenne, gloves, specially formulated nail polish… Nothing works. Nada, zilch, niente, rien, nix, nothing. I mean, it works for a while, but then as soon as the stuff wears off and the nails have grown just so, I go at them with a vengeance….

My partner's nephew, Christopher, is visiting us. He is a typical boy, nine years old. Into everything. Chases pigeons and climbs everything that is (or is not) climbable. This is my first time caring for a child, the exhaustion is greatly offset by the emotional returns one gets from being with/ caring for a child.

Kudos to Brazil

In the hopes of helping the poor reduce unwanted pregnancies and dangerous (and illegal) pregnancies, Brazil's government has added "morning after" pills to its newly expanded birth control program.

Jose Gomes Temporão, Brazil’s Health Minister announced the addition a month after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the government would provide cheap birth control pills at 10,000 drug stores across Latin America's biggest country.

Opening days of summer in New York City. As if on cue, and as it should be, summer heat has arrived. Two days ago the scorcher days set in: humid blanket over the city, everything feels heavy and summery. The buzz of the air conditioners reigns supreme day into night. I love it.
